Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA)

Personnel: Sheila Nau, ICWA Director

Mission:

The Health and Wellness Center is committed to facilitate and establish a positive quality of life emotionally, physically, spiritually and mentally in the Community.

History:

The Indian Child Welfare Act or ICWA as it is known is a Federal Law enacted by Congress in 1978. This law was enacted because many Indian children were being removed from their families and their Tribe and placed with non-Indian families and as a result, the tribe lost members and the children lost their ties to their culture and their heritage. The goal of the Indian Child Welfare Act office is to keep the Indian Family intact by providing services designed to prevent the removal of Indian children from their families, tribe and their culture. We believe in a strong child abuse prevention program and continually offer appropriate services, providing healthy parenting literature and community presentations. The Drop in Center works closely with our Community Center Youth Program as well as our Cultural Center, Community Health Representative and Diabetes Programs. Since California is a 638 State in which jurisdiction over law enforcement and child abuse issues is handled by State Law Enforcement and Child and Family Agencies we do make referrals when criminal acts and/or child abuse occur.
“There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than in the way it treats its children.” Nelson Mandela.

Services Provided:

  • Parenting Classes and Marriage and Family Counseling.
  • Community Presentation regarding Domestic Violence, Bullying, Substance Abuse as well as other factors which are destroying the fabric of Native American Families.well trained, medically guided health care workers.
